Personal Online Education Vs Physical College Degree

Some experts now say that anyone can become a virtual expert in nearly any subject in about 2-weeks of full-time, high-paced study on the Internet. Is this true? Well, I believe it is, but let's think about this rationally before we go jumping to conclusions.
First, let's consider the philosophical perspective. What is an expert? Some say that an expert is anyone who knows their industry or field of endeavor better than 80% of the rest of the participants in the sector.
Okay, so that is the basic 80/20 rule right? Well, maybe that is a good way to judge things? Eighty percent of any industry is just made up of place holders or those who earn a living there and do their 9-5 thing. But, in every industry there are industry experts and we could say that they are between 5-20% of the industry participants.
Now then, can someone studying their little rear off actually be more acquainted with the industry and all its information or a sub-sector of that industry by reading and studying on the Internet for two weeks solid? Maybe they can, it depends on what they are reading or if they are taking an actual online course or completely immersed in it.
Let's say for the sake of argument someone studies 17-hours per day for two weeks taking no days off. If so they will have spend just under 240 hours of study in that time period. And they will have a benefit too, as they can study all the latest information, whereas a person with a college degree that is 10-years old, but considered an expert might not have.
Wow, maybe studying online is the way to go, and maybe just maybe someone who studies that hard may actually be an expert in many things and many different industries over a 4-5 year period.
Personally, this is how I see it and basically this is what I have done for the last 10-years online reading anything and everything in any industry that interests me. But does that really make me an expert? You decide, this article's mission has been fulfilled, to make you think. By Lance Winslow

You are expert or not depends on how someone defines what is expert. In my views by reading you can gain knowledge but to became expert you have to gain experience in that particular field.
